Are Directories Dying Off?

Has Yellow Pages Had its Day?
I recently received the latest Yellow Pages directory for Southampton and then, today, the latest Thomson Local directory came through my door.  To say that I was a little surprised when I saw them is a bit of an understatement and I’m sure you’ll understand what I mean from the photographs comparing the 2010/2011 editions to the 2011/2012 editions.
In just one year both directories have shrunk, both in physical size and in the number of pages they contain.  This can only be the result of either a substantial reduction in the number of businesses advertising …

The Biggest Networking Challenge

The Networking Nemesis

There are a number of challenges when it comes to networking but the biggest networking challenge, the real ‘Networking Nemesis’ is, perhaps, a little surprising;  it’s Human Nature.
Let me explain what I mean by that.
Some time ago a survey was carried out to establish exactly what it is that people fear the most  – to find out, exactly, what our biggest fears are.  Unbelievably, the fear of dying only managed to make it to number 3!!  Number 2 turned out to be the fear of walking in to a room full of strangers and the number 1 fear …

Nick Vujicic – Truly Inspirational

Following on from my last post, ‘I Will Fly‘, I remembered Nick Vujicic, a truly inspirational individual.  If you’ve never heard of him or seen him before, you may find the video a little shocking, at least, when you first come to realise the challenges that Nick has  had to face in his life.
And for Nick, those challenges are there every day.  Although, I doubt that he thinks of it that way!  🙂
You see, Nick Vujicic’s a prime example of the strength and determination that pervades the human spirit.  It’s not just that he doesn’t allow his disabilities to stop …

And I Will Fly

If you’re like me, then you can’t help but be touched when you hear about someone that’s suffering from some kind of serious illness or disability.  Particularly, where there’s the distinct possibility that their condition could prove to be life threatening or could lead to them having to face what, to us, are seemingly impossible challenges.  And, unless you’ve faced that kind of a scenario, yourself, it’s difficult to imagine how you would react.
But people do react in very different ways and some of them are, truly, inspirational.  Not only in the way that they face their situation but how …

It’s Not What You Say, It’s HOW You Say It

When it comes to marketing or copywriting, there’s no doubt that we can’t afford to ignore the power of words and how we use them to get our message across.  Whether it’s the written word or the spoken word is, largely, immaterial but how we put them together, how we frame our words, who’s perspective we consider and how we engage the emotions are all important elements in our communication.
Now, I don’t know whether the following video is genuine or somewhat contrived.  Either way, it clearly demonstrates that it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it that makes …

Why have a Multiple Income Stream Strategy (M.I.S.S)

Times have changed, the economy has changed, the job market has changed, people have changed and technology is developing at an unprecedented rate.  As a result of these changes, general opinion suggests that we can no longer expect to have a job for life.  And there’s more change ahead!
It’s widely estimated that the average person will change jobs 10 – 15 times during their working life and that may well include 2 or more complete changes in career path.  Of course, some of these changes may be taken completely voluntarily, as part of our career development strategy, but the chances …

The Don’t Quit Poem – Inspirational

It’s certainly true that we all have challenges at one time or another and, sometimes, these challenges can make us question ourselves in all kinds of different ways.   In fact, I recently had such a challenge facing me.
At times like this, it’s really nice to know that there’s always someone there to remind us of what’s important and where our focus should be – even though they may not realise what they’ve done or the impact they’ve had!
A very good friend posted this poem on Linked in today – and the timing was perfect.   It’s one of my favourites …

How Great Leaders Inspire Action

We all know how important communication is in business but how do great leaders inspire us to take action?  How do great companies inspire us to take action and part with our hard earned cash to purchase their products and services?  And how can you learn from them so that you can do the same and inspire your staff, your colleagues and your clients?
Simon Sinek asked himself this very same question and, as a result of his research, he discovered a pattern in the way that great leaders communicate.  That led to him writing an excellent book, Start with Why, …

Do You Own A Business Or A Job?

If you run your own business you may think that this is a silly question but bare with me because it’s, actually, a really important one – for several reasons.
The best definition I’ve ever come across as to what a business is, or should be, came from a friend at Action Coach.  They define a business as;
‘A commercial, profitable enterprise that works without you’
and, if your business works without you, then you really do own one.
Another question that will help you understand what I’m talking about is this;
How long could you be away from your business before you stop earning …

Marketing ~ Some Things Change, Some Don’t

I’ve been working in the field of marketing for over 30 years now and it’s always been a fast-paced, highly creative and ever changing world.  But, since the advent of the internet, email, websites, search engines and, most recently, social media the pace of change has never been so fast.
The range of media that’s now available to help businesses market their wares is huge and can be, somewhat, confusing.
If you know what you’re doing and you get it right, the rewards can be substantial but it’s also very easy to get things wrong and waste a lot of money.
For example, …
