Way back in 1979 I started my working life in the role of ‘Assistant to the Sales Manager’ at Sandicliffe (Boston) Ltd, a Ford Main Dealer in Boston, Lincolnshire.  In that role I managed to get myself noticed, not only by the Sales Manager but by the General Manager of the Dealership, as well.  As a result, I was offered the opportunity to train in sales at Fords training centre in the UK – An opportunity that I grabbed, firmly, with both hands!

At just 18 years of age, this move took me way, way out of my comfort zone but  it proved to be a great move for me.  In fact, I rapidly developed in this role over the next few months and proved to be an excellent communicator.

I continued to work in the Motor Trade for over 7 years, developing into the roles of Sales Manager, Business Manager and General Manager during that time.

Since October 1986 I’ve worked for myself, initially in Direct Sales and then, later on, running my own businesses in Sales and Marketing and in hardwood flooring and custom made fitted furniture.

A Checkered FlagVery early in my sales career I found that I really do have quite a competitive streak and, if I’m going to do something, I like to do it to the very best of my ability.  This desire to perform at the highest level made me realise that I’m completely passionate about personal development and I’ve always seen myself as being a lifelong learner.

I joined BNI, the world’s largest and most successful business referral organisation, in October 2000 and being a member worked extremely well for me.  I was keen to develop my networking skills as, before, BNI, they had been somewhat lacking.  Fortunately for me, BNI focus a lot on training and I developed those skills to the point where I was generating a 6 figure annual turnover in my hardwood flooring business, just from the business referrals generated through my BNI membership.

BNI LogoI was invited to become a BNI Director on a number of occasions and, early in 2009, the timing seemed to be right.  I now help to start new BNI Chapters and I work with members to help them get the very best return possible from their networking efforts.  My aim being to help others develop the skills that I did.

One of the things that I’ve discovered, over the years, is that I do get a bit of a buzz from helping people.

If you’ve ever read Michael Gerber’s terrific book, ‘The E-Myth’, you’ll be aware that the vast majority of businesses are started by what photo of The E Myth book coverMichael refers to as ‘Technicians’.   That is, people that are excellent at what they do, in terms of their trade or profession, but that have little or no experience in running a business.

Of course, there are many elements to building a successful business but most of them are irrelevant if you don’t have your Sales and Marketing working effectively.  After all, if you don’t have any potential customers to talk to and you’re not making any sales, you don’t really have a business.

Many business owners see Sales & Marketing as being something of a ‘Dark Art’, so, I’m now putting over 30 years experience to work helping business owners become more efficient and more effective in their Sales & Marketing efforts – whether that’s online or offline.
